The Sermon of Jesus–Matthew 5 part 1

Let’s make a list of things that bring you blessings as a Child of God.  The first Category—Attitude.  I wonder why of all the sermons Jesus could have preached to this mass of humanity, he chose this day and this topic.  I think it is because one’s attitude affects all aspects of their walk.  Attitude also affects one’s ability to be blessed and to enjoy the blessing. A close look at our Lord’s words show his attention to the hearts of folks—the poor in spirit, those that mourn, the meek, those that seek and embrace righteousness, the merciful and the peacemakers all represent those that are awesome and vulnerable.  Jesus goes on to include those that are harassed and abused for their faith.

Jesus wanted the people to understand that God cares about the circumstances in our lives and blesses those that are seeking him and are in the midst of struggle.  In our lives, the same holds true.  He knows our life, our pain and our hearts.  He truly wants to bless us—are we of a mind to be blessed?  Please, father–help me to maintain a blessed attitude as I follow you.

God Bless You

5 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
