Psalm 23–Jesus Our Great Shepherd

There is no coincidence with the Lord.  When we think of the many roles Jesus takes in our lives, the one that probably pleases Him most is the role of shepherd.  A shepherd is so much more than a herder and a shearer.  The Shepherd knows His sheep and His sheep know Him.

When a person looks at sheep, they all look a great deal alike. white fluffy cotton balls with legs.  But like us, sheep are unique and have unique behaviors.  The great shepherds recognize those unique qualities and tends each one accordingly.

It is no coincidence that Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and his sons were shepherds, even for Pharoah. God assigned great import to the role.  It seemed to be an ongoing theme.  Moses shepherded for 40 years before leading the children of Israel out of Egypt and to the Promised Land.

David, God’s anointed and beloved king, learned his skills as a warrior and a leader on the hills overlooking Bethlehem while he was watching sheep.  So, as the Son of David made his appearance on the earth, how fitting that the angels first announced His arrival to the shepherds.  The shepherds were the first to welcome Jesus to Bethlehem.  When describing God’s love for us; Jesus used a shepherd as the model for a loving God’s personal concern for His chosen.

When we think of Jesus love for us, we need to remember He is always on watch. Like any great shepherd, He is lying in front of the gate to protect us from all who would devour us.  He knows us by name and as we love Him, we will know the Lord’s voice.  When I think of this Savior and Lord, I cannot help but remember that as a wonderful shepherd, he laid his life down for me and stands watch over me every day.

God Bless You

1-3 God, my shepherd!
    I don’t need a thing.
You have bedded me down in lush meadows,
you find me quiet pools to drink from.
True to your word,
you let me catch my breath
and send me in the right direction.

Even when the way goes through
    Death Valley,
I’m not afraid
when you walk at my side.
Your trusty shepherd’s crook
    makes me feel secure.

You serve me a six-course dinner
right in front of my enemies.
You revive my drooping head;
    my cup brims with blessing.

Your beauty and love chase after me
    every day of my life.
I’m back home in the house of God
for the rest of my life.
