Full Armor of God–Shield of Faith–Various Verses

I love looking at the shield of faith.  If one ever gets the opportunity, they should watch the 300.  In that movie, the Spartans fight the Persians, and we see the way armies used their shields to not only repel the enemy attacks but to also advance their own battle front.  The shields (Scutum) were as big as doors, and they were made of wood and leather.  you could wet the leather and it would become fire retardant.  So, when enemies would shoot flaming arrows, they would extinguish as soon as they landed.

When attacked, the soldiers would form a unit and become like a giant wall of shields and the enemy could not penetrate.  As long as they were unified, it was almost impossible to break through.  As the men would tire, they would start falling off and leaving holes in the wall allowing the enemy to break through.

Faith works the same way.  We have our individual faith that stands like a shield.  We bathe it in the word and in prayer, and not unlike the Roman shields it becomes soaked and flame retardant. So as the enemy fires arrows of doubt, criticism, temptation, and fear; we can allow the shield of faith to extinguish them as they land.  What is more important, as we stand as a body of believers, we form the same wall that the Roman guard formed.  The attacks on us as a body are not successful.  They make a great deal of noise and fury, but in the end, we press on to talk hold of that for which Christ took hold of us.  Philippians 3:12

Still, we must remain faithful.  As we grow weak, we leave spots open for attack.  it takes each of us walking daily and following closely to be an effective tool of God for the spreading of the Gospel and the showing others all our Lord’s attributes.  Abraham, Moses, David, and heroes through Hebrews 11 had faith in common.  Their faith was counted to them as righteousness.  We must seek the Lord in prayer and in His word so we can join such a great cloud of witnesses in this journey of faith. Hebrews 12:1-2

God Bless You

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Hebrews 11

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Hebrews 12

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

1 John 5:4

For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.

1 Corinthians 6:4

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.
