Fruit of the Spirit, Faithfulness–Faith Hall of Fame

Great is they faithfulness is one of my favorites and probably one of Christians far and wide favorite hymns.  It is impossible to express how incredible it is to serve a God that remains faithful no matter our actions. We, who remain faithful can count upon God not only meeting His covenant, but to far exceed any and all expectations.

The faith hall of fame in Hebrews 11 reminds us that without faith it is impossible to please God.  From creation to Christ’s return, God has called His chosen to trust Him and to remain faithful.  I love the list God sets out–Able, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah… God honored each of their lives without completing His promise before them.

That chapter enumerates a host of Godly people who, while ordinary, did extraordinary things to show their faith and devotion to God.  As His chosen, we must also, as ordinary people, exercise extraordinary faith and operate in this fallen world.  We may never see the promise of God completed while we are here on earth.  Still, we understand that God has always kept His word.  We therefore must walk in that confidence and act faithfully as His ambassadors. That faithfulness will lead those who may be lost into a right relationship with the Lord.

If we will, then we can experience the same joy experienced by those in Hebrews 12:1-2.

God Bless You

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for.

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”[a] For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she[b] considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. 15 If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

Hebrews 12

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.[a] Because of the joy[b] awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
