There is a hymn that was written by Martin Luther, It is called “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”. It is one of the best known and most sung hymns in history. It is a great reminder that God is indeed our refuge and strength. Amid the spiritual war that occurs in our lives and in our world, God remains the fortress, the anchor, and the refuge in men’s lives.
It is so easy to rely upon other things to provide the protection and the provision for daily living. We look to our wealth, our skills, our position, and our cleverness to navigate life’s different twists and turns. When we do, we are so often disappointed. The psalmist reminds us that it remains God that protects and provides. Further, It is God that can literally melt rock, starts and ends wars, saves and ends lives and suffering. It is that God that takes personal interest and care in our individual lives.
We, like the psalmist, must embrace the reality of God’s sovereignty and power. We can rely upon His protection, preparation, and provision for our lives. When we do seek Him, God becomes our mighty fortress. He walks with us through battle and provides shelter from the onslaught of enemy attacks. On this weekend of Easter, we can see at the cross God’s ultimate reminder of His love and provision for our lives. We need only accept His gift of salvation and allow our Lord to be the mighty fortress for our daily battles!
God Bless You
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
