Genesis 28 Part 2–Jacob’s Adventure Begins

What a great way to start an adventure.  Jacob had no idea about what was about to be his life.  He left home with his parents’ blessing, his brothers rage and bitterness, and started to his parents’ homeland with absolutely no idea what would become of his life.  He had of course heard the telling of the covenant and that His dad was to be a father of a great nation.  Still at this point in his life, Jacob was a young man, single and leaving the land he was promised.

Then as he fell asleep God revealed and reminded Jacob the import of His life.  God stood at heaven’s gate and reminded Jacob that he was to father a great people.  They would be as prolific as the dust.  They would impact the entire world and they would be blessed and protected by God.  It was not a bad way to start a journey.  By the end, Jacob would experience great victories, great sadness, and a life that would change the world.

Still, at this point, Jacob would be on his way.  Walking with the promise that God clearly had his back.  Jacob’s dream revealed the spiritual ongoing day to day.  Jacob saw the angels coming and going and hopefully saw God is involved in our daily lives.  It is also a promise to us.  We need to know we are protected by a Father that loves us and wants nothing more than to see us follow and be blessed.  We cannot forget that Salvation is an event and a process.  Our daily transformation comes with great care and intention.  If we will but follow, then like Jacob we can rest assured that God will complete His plan for our lives.

God Bless You

10 Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Harran. 11 When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. 12 He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13 There above it[c] stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. 14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.[d] 15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

16 When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” 17 He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.”

18 Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on top of it. 19 He called that place Bethel,[e] though the city used to be called Luz.
