It was very simple, Jesus told those following him that God Had called them to be salt and light. He told the crowd that the were to be the difference makers. Salt preserves and enhances flavor in life. If it is no longer a preservative or flavor enhancer, it is simply of no use. In the same way, when the people of God, are not serving God, they are also of no use. Jesus was not calling people worthless, on the contrary, He was telling them that they were the very essence of life. They enhanced and preserved life–but if they refused to follow him, they would neither enhance nor preserve life.
Next, he told them that they were the light of the world. It is an amazing thing, light–in the darkest of places, even a small light will change everything. Light, you see will immediately cast out darkness, but darkness cannot now or ever drown out light. Jesus told the folks–“You are the light of the world” It is your job to drown out darkness, not to allow darkness to overcome you. It is God’s people’s job, to stand up to the dark and push it away. Darkness should never be able to push us out, nor overcome us.
Finally, God did not send Jesus to get rid of the law, instead he sent hi to fulfill it. What men were not able to do–bridge the gap between sin and death by their behavior, Jesus did by dying for men’s sin. The law was designed to point men back to their need for God, but instead it simply exposed men’s inability to trust God, or follow Him on their own. So God, demonstrated His love for men by sending Jesus to do what the law could not–pay the price and redeem that which had been lost.
In short, We are called to be different. We are to be the salt and light–real change makers. Jesus came to give us that ability. In addition, when we understand that His grace is not a free pass from following the law, but instead is simply the fulfillment of the redemption story, we should be all the more eager to submit and follow Him closely. That, after all, is why he came!
This week, Let’s be Salt and Light.
God Bless You
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
The Fulfillment of the Law
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
