As a leader, David always took it back to the Lord. This Psalm is particularly applicable, because it is a reminder that God always delivered the King and gave him a fresh start. From boyhood, David faced lions, bears, giants, kings, opposing armies, family and his own sin. In each case, David was completely outmatched on his own–but, completely safe in the arms of the Lord.
God brought David through each trial, and gave him a fresh start to face the next. It was not as if God told David, “Sorry David, you have used up all your chips–now you have to go it alone.” God met him where he was; and each time protected, delivered and gave David a fresh start.
God offers us that fresh start, as well. It does not matter to God how many times we call upon him for his help and leadership. God is always ready to move forward and set us on track for the next adventure. The Lord does not keep score, instead, like David, he clears the slate each day and gives us a fresh start. We need not live our lives as though we have used up all the grace God is willing to give. Instead, we need simply to be grateful for what he has done, and start new each day trusting and following our Lord.
God Bless You
I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
2 Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live.
3 The cords of death entangled me,
the anguish of the grave came over me;
I was overcome by distress and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the Lord:
“Lord, save me!”
5 The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
6 The Lord protects the unwary;
when I was brought low, he saved me.
7 Return to your rest, my soul,
for the Lord has been good to you.
8 For you, Lord, have delivered me from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling,
9 that I may walk before the Lord
in the land of the living.
