This scripture is convicting for me. In this crazy election cycle, the thought of simply submitting to authority of the elected officials is very disconcerting. But, make no mistake, so was also the case in Rome. The great republic now turned empire was the epitome of social confusion. Paul was soon to be in Rome for good and had seen its heavy handed rule over Israel. Paul was a Roman citizen as well, so he knew firsthand how a failure to submit would end. Paul, the man that died at the hands of the Emperor said clearly that we are to submit to our leaders.
It is a very hard call in current society. Our nation, founded on the idea that people were created equal and had the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In these changing times, it grows more and more ominous as to whether those rights will endure. As we pick our leaders, there is so much confusion as to who will uphold our rights and liberties.
But, Paul says that we need to submit to whomever God installs. If that is the case, then we have to live by faith and trust God with not only our future, but also with the timing of our future. Thanks, Lord, for being the ultimate authority. Help me to honor you with my life, liberty and pursuit of happiness!
God Bless You
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended
