It stinks to be disciplined. I remember, as a child, my folks saying that the spanking I was receiving hurt them worse than it hurt me…Only after parenting a few kids do you realize the truth in that statement.  God formed us to have fellowship with him.  Like any father, his joy is seeing our lives made wonderful.  That desire outweighs any other emotion.  That is why when our children are in danger, in pain or in trouble–we do what is necessary to set them on the right path.

God is the same.  He would rather our lives be all ponies and rainbows, but the preparation to be his chosen ones often require trials, temptation and pain.  It breaks his heart to see us in pain.  it crushes him to have to allow discipline in our lives.  It is an awful thing for God to see us grieving and hurt–but, we are preparing for an eternity with him.  He wants his kids to be ready for war and subject to the authority that frees us.  Sadly, it is difficult.  If we can bear up under it, however, we will be trained and ready to face whatever would stand between us and an eternity with him.

Be Strong and Courageous

God Bless You

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says,

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”[a]

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.
